Overview

Xylan synthase is a multimeric enzyme complex essential for the biosynthesis of xylan, the primary hemicellulose component of the secondary cell walls in plants (Urbanowicz et al., 2014). The complex, primarily composed of glycosyltransferases such as IRX9, IRX10, and IRX14, catalyzes the elongation of the beta-1,4-linked xylose backbone using UDP-xylose as a substrate (Jensen et al., 2014, PubMed: 24458564). While critical for plant structural integrity, vascular development, and water transport, this enzyme has no orthologs in the human genome (UniProt, Q9LVM1). Consequently, it does not play a role in human disease and is not currently utilized as a therapeutic target in clinical medicine. However, it is a significant focus in industrial biotechnology for the modification of plant biomass to improve biofuel production efficiency and enhance agricultural crop sturdiness (Scheller & Ulvskov, 2010, PubMed: 20141389). Currently, there are no approved pharmaceutical drugs or clinical candidates that interact with this enzyme.
