Overview

Xylulose kinase (XYLB) is an enzyme that catalyzes the ATP-dependent phosphorylation of D-xylulose to yield D-xylulose 5-phosphate, an important intermediate in the pentose phosphate pathway and glucuronate-xylulose pathway[1][2][5][7]. In mammals, it is predominantly expressed in the liver and kidney and may play regulatory roles in glucose metabolism and lipogenesis via its product, xylulose 5-phosphate[1][7]. The enzyme belongs to the sugar kinase/hsp70/actin superfamily of transferases, with close homology to glycerol kinase[1][2]. Deficiencies or altered expression of xylulose kinase have been associated with conditions such as pentosuria, and it is considered functionally important in energy homeostasis and metabolic regulation[5][7].
