Yeast cytosine deaminase (yCD) is an enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolytic deamination of cytosine to uracil. It is involved in pyrimidine salvage. Its ability to convert the non-toxic prodrug 5-fluorocytosine (5FC) into the chemotherapeutic agent 5-fluorouracil (5FU) makes it useful in gene-directed enzyme prodrug therapy (GDEPT) for cancer treatment. Mammalian cells lack this enzyme, allowing for selective killing of tumor cells expressing yCD.
