Overview

Yellow fever virus 17D-204 is a live-attenuated strain of the Yellow fever virus, a member of the Flaviviridae family [1]. It is the primary component of several widely used vaccines, such as YF-VAX and Stamaril, designed to provide long-term immunity against yellow fever infection [2, 5]. The strain was developed by serial passage of the virulent Asibi strain in embryonated chicken eggs, resulting in a virus that is non-pathogenic in humans but highly immunogenic [4]. It functions by stimulating the production of neutralizing antibodies and activating cytotoxic T-cells [3]. While generally safe, the 17D-204 strain is associated with rare but severe adverse effects, including viscerotropic and neurotropic diseases, which mimic the natural infection [2]. Beyond its use as a vaccine, the 17D-204 strain is also utilized as a viral vector in the development of other vaccines, such as those for Japanese encephalitis and Dengue fever [4].
