Target intelligence / Profile preview

Yersinia pestis (Y. pestis)

Target
Y. pestis
Molecular classification
Bacterium, Gram-negative bacterium, Coccobacillus, Pathogen
01

Overview

Yersinia pestis is a Gram-negative bacterium and the causative agent of plague. It possesses several virulence factors, including a type III secretion system (T3SS), Yops proteins, LcrV antigen, and yersiniabactin, which contribute to its pathogenicity by suppressing the host's immune response and facilitating iron acquisition. Transmission occurs primarily through flea bites or contact with infected animals or tissues. The bacterium can cause bubonic, septicemic, and pneumonic plague.

Other names
Pasteurella pestis
