Overview

Zeaxanthin is a naturally occurring xanthophyll carotenoid (chemical formula C₄₀H₅₆O₂), distinguished by a long conjugated double-bond system and two hydroxyl groups, which render it polar and confer its intense yellow-orange pigment[1][3][5][7]. It is a powerful antioxidant widely distributed in fruits, vegetables, and some microorganisms, and is most concentrated in the macula of the human eye[2][3][7]. Zeaxanthin protects retinal tissues from blue-light-induced oxidative stress, and may help slow the progression of age-related macular degeneration and cataracts[2][3][4][8][9]. Its benefits extend to potential protection against cardiovascular disease, UV-induced skin damage, inflammation, and other chronic diseases[2][4]. Zeaxanthin is available as a dietary supplement and is also used as a natural colorant in foods[1][9]. It is not a protein molecular target for drugs but is instead a dietary bioactive molecule beneficial for health.
