Overview

ZFAT antisense RNA 1 (ZFAT-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA expressed in human peripheral blood B-lymphocytes, among other tissues[1]. ZFAT-AS1 is transcribed antisense to the ZFAT gene and negatively regulates the truncated ZFAT isoform (TR-ZFAT) via epigenetic mechanisms, including recruitment of PRC2 and the induction of H3K27me3 modifications[3]. Its expression is subject to imprinting and monoallelic regulation, which is important for developmental and placental function in mammals[2]. A specific SNP in its promoter/3'-UTR (shared with TR-ZFAT) is linked to increased risk of autoimmune thyroid disease[1]. In glioma cells, ZFAT-AS1 overexpression suppresses cell proliferation, migration, and invasion, while promoting apoptosis, suggesting a role as a tumor suppressor lncRNA[3]. No drugs currently target ZFAT-AS1, but its expression level and associated SNP may serve as research biomarkers for disease susceptibility and pathogenesis[1][3][4][5].
