Overview

ZFP91-CNTF readthrough is a transcript generated by co-transcription of the neighboring ZFP91 and CNTF genes on human chromosome 11. The readthrough transcript contains sequence from both genes and is considered a candidate for nonsense-mediated decay, and thus not believed to encode a functional protein. It is classified as a non-coding RNA with no current evidence of protein expression or biological function. There is no evidence supporting its role as a therapeutic target, nor any associated known ligands or drugs. Instead, individual genes ZFP91 (a zinc finger protein/transcription factor) and CNTF (ciliary neurotrophic factor) are functional entities; the readthrough is a product of transcriptional overlap without clear physiological or pathological function[1][5][6]. ZFP91 is a zinc finger protein and atypical E3 ubiquitin ligase involved in NF-kappaB pathway regulation. However, these features are not attributed to the readthrough transcript[2][4]. CNTF alone is a ciliary neurotrophic factor involved in neuronal maintenance, but again this is not a property of the readthrough transcript[7]. ZFP91-CNTF readthrough is not a canonical therapeutic target and likely represents a non-functional, non-protein-coding RNA product[1][5]. If you are looking for a functional target, you may want to refer to ZFP91 or CNTF individually.
