Overview

ZFPM1 antisense RNA 1 (ZFPM1-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA transcribed from chromosome 16, antisense to the ZFPM1 gene[4]. It does not encode a protein but instead regulates gene expression post-transcriptionally, predominantly by acting as a competitive endogenous RNA that sequesters microRNAs, thereby influencing the expression of genes implicated in cell proliferation, apoptosis, invasion, and metastasis of several cancers[1][2]. Elevated levels of ZFPM1-AS1 are frequently observed in various tumor types, including gastric, lung, and liver cancers, and are generally associated with poor clinical outcomes and altered immune infiltration[2]. Its expression has also been linked to chemotherapeutic drug sensitivity and may serve as a prognostic or predictive biomarker in oncology[2].

Mechanism of action

ZFPM1-AS1 modulates cell behavior by: - Acting as a competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) for microRNAs (e.g., miR-515) - Regulating oncogenic pathways such as the Wnt/β-catenin pathway

03

Biological functions

Regulation of gene expressionRegulation of cell proliferationRegulation of apoptosisModulation of cell signaling pathways
04

Disease associations

Cancer (oncogenic lncRNA, implicated in multiple tumor types)Possible roles in chemoresistance
05

Safety considerations

None directly applicable. As a non-coding RNA with no direct druggability, safety issues would only pertain to potential therapeutic interventions (e.g., RNA-based therapies), which are investigational.
06

Biomarkers

Potential role as a biomarker for: - Cancer prognosis (elevated expression indicates worse overall or disease-specific survival in several tumor types)Predicting response or resistance to chemotherapy (5-FU, oxaliplatin, cisplatin)
