Zika virus is a mosquito-borne, single-stranded RNA virus belonging to the family Flaviviridae and genus Flavivirus. It is primarily transmitted through the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes but can also be spread through sexual contact and from mother to fetus. Infection during pregnancy can cause congenital Zika syndrome, including severe microcephaly. There is no specific antiviral treatment or vaccine available, and management is supportive.
