Overview

ZIM2 antisense RNA 1 (ZIM2-AS1, or ZIM2as) is a primate-specific long non-coding RNA transcribed antisense to the ZIM2 gene (zinc finger imprinted gene 2), a member of the imprinted PEG3 domain locus. ZIM2-AS1 was identified in human brain and testis, with expression also observed in other primates like chimpanzee and orangutan[1]. It does not appear to encode protein. ZIM2-AS1 is involved in regulating the local epigenetic environment, as suggested by its association with allele-specific DNA methylation patterns near its promoter and in adjacent regulatory regions. While the biological functions of ZIM2-AS1 remain to be fully characterized, by analogy to other antisense lncRNAs, it may participate in the fine-tuning of imprinted gene expression, possibly through chromatin remodeling, recruitment of regulatory proteins, or interference with transcription[1][2]. No direct therapeutic targeting or disease association is currently reported for ZIM2-AS1, and it is not established as a druggable therapeutic target. Key notes: - ZIM2-AS1 is not a protein, enzyme, transporter, or receptor, but rather a non-coding regulatory RNA. It is not recognized as a therapeutic target in current biomedical practice[1]. - The information on specific biological or disease roles is inferred from general properties of long non-coding antisense RNAs, as disease-specific roles for ZIM2-AS1 are not established in the literature[1][2]. - No known drugs, mechanisms of action, biomarkers, or safety concerns are associated with this target at this time.
