Zinc-dependent Ectopeptidase

Molecular classification
Enzyme, Metalloprotease, Ectopeptidase
01

Overview

A zinc-dependent ectopeptidase is a membrane-bound enzyme that utilizes a zinc ion (Zn²⁺) at its active site to catalyze the cleavage of peptide bonds, typically at the N-terminus of small peptides. These enzymes are often involved in various physiological processes, including peptide digestion, cell signaling, and regulation of bioactive peptides on the cell surface. A representative example is Aminopeptidase N (ANPEP/CD13), which is overexpressed in several cancers and acts as a receptor for some coronaviruses. Inhibition of these enzymes is being explored as a therapeutic strategy for cancer and viral infections.
