Zinc finger and SCAN domain containing 12 pseudogene 1 (ZSCAN12P1)

Target
ZSCAN12P1
Molecular classification
Other (Pseudogene), Related to Zinc finger and SCAN domain-containing proteins (Transcription factor family, but as a pseudogene), Not a canonical transcription factor (as it is a pseudogene)
01

Overview

Zinc finger and SCAN domain containing 12 pseudogene 1 (ZSCAN12P1) is classified as a human pseudogene related to the zinc finger and SCAN domain protein family. Pseudogenes are DNA sequences similar to normal genes but are non-functional due to mutations or loss of regulatory elements, and therefore do not produce active proteins. While some pseudogenes may be transcribed and can act as regulatory RNAs, ZSCAN12P1 itself lacks evidence of protein function or direct involvement in biological pathways. It is sometimes mistaken for a transcription factor due to its sequence similarity to zinc finger proteins but is not an active molecular target in health or disease

Mechanism of action

None applicable; not a drug target

03

Biological functions

Non-coding; not known to encode functional proteinPutative regulatory roles at RNA level (if transcribed), typical of pseudogenes—may act as competitive endogenous RNA (ceRNA), miRNA decoys, or produce siRNAs with possible regulatory functions in gene expressionNo direct biological function as a receptor, enzyme, or signaling molecule
04

Disease associations

No direct association with diseases as a functional entityPseudogene transcripts can have indirect roles—sometimes involved in regulation of disease-associated genes (general property of pseudogenes; protein-coding parent genes sometimes linked to cancer, diabetes, etc.)No evidence linking ZSCAN12P1 specifically to disease
05

Safety considerations

Not applicable; no therapeutic interventions targeted to this pseudogene
06

Interacting drugs

None known; pseudogene, not a pharmacological or therapeutic target
07

Biomarkers

None established; not known as a biomarker
