Overview

Zinc finger and SCAN domain-containing protein 12 (ZSCAN12) is a predicted DNA-binding transcription factor containing both C2H2 zinc finger motifs and a SCAN protein-protein interaction domain[1][2][3][5]. It is believed to regulate transcription of genes by RNA polymerase II, acting at specific DNA regulatory regions, and is localized primarily in the nucleus[2][3]. The ZSCAN family, to which ZSCAN12 belongs, can influence a broad range of cellular processes—such as apoptosis, cell differentiation, migration, proliferation, and chemotherapy response—mainly through modulation of downstream gene expression and chromatin organization[5]. Differential methylation of ZSCAN12 has been used as a biomarker indicating tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte (TIL) density in the tumor microenvironment of gastric cancer and is correlated with patient survival, highlighting its potential value for prognosis and immune environment assessment[1]. There are currently no drugs specifically targeting ZSCAN12, and it is not classified as a direct therapeutic target but rather as a biomarker and component of gene regulatory mechanisms[1][3][5].
