Overview

Zinc finger and SCAN domain-containing protein 16 (ZSCAN16) is a human protein encoded by the ZSCAN16 gene on chromosome 6p22.1[1][3][4][5]. It is a member of the ZSCAN family of transcription factors, characterized by the presence of C2H2-type zinc finger domains, which mediate sequence-specific DNA binding, and a SCAN domain, which mediates protein-protein interactions, including homo- and hetero-dimerization within the family[2][3][5]. ZSCAN16, like other ZSCAN proteins, is believed to function as a transcription factor, modulating gene expression by binding DNA in a sequence-specific manner and influencing the activity of regulatory elements[3][2]. While the precise biological activities and disease roles of ZSCAN16 have not been fully characterized, the broader ZSCAN family is implicated in essential cellular processes such as cell proliferation, apoptosis, differentiation, migration, and invasion, particularly in the context of cancer[2][9]. There is currently no evidence for direct targeting of ZSCAN16 by therapeutic drugs, nor for clinical use as a biomarker or known safety concerns[3][9][2].
