Overview

Zinc finger BED domain-containing protein 5 (ZBED5) is a human protein encoded by the ZBED5 gene, notable for its origin from a domesticated DNA transposon, specifically a Charlie-like element[1][3][6]. ZBED genes, including ZBED5, are part of a regulatory protein family in vertebrates, unified by a BED-type zinc finger domain that binds DNA elements, consistent with their presumed functions as transcription factors or gene regulators[2][5][6][7]. ZBED5 does not appear to be an active transposase, as it lacks terminal inverted repeats, but is conserved among mammals of the Laurasiatheria branch[1]. Although detailed, unique biological functions for ZBED5 remain under-characterized, ZBED family proteins overall are important for DNA-binding and regulatory activities[2][3][6]. To date, there are no established roles for ZBED5 as a common therapeutic target, biomarker, or as directly involved in human disease; it also lacks known interacting drugs or associated safety concerns[3][7].
