Zinc finger BED-type containing 4 (ZBED4) is a nuclear regulatory protein containing four BED-type zinc finger DNA-binding domains, an hATC dimerization domain, and LXXLL motifs characteristic of coactivator/corepressor proteins for nuclear hormone receptors. ZBED4 is expressed in human and mouse retina, specifically in cone photoreceptors and Müller glial cells, where it is localized to both nuclear and cytoplasmic compartments and is thought to play a role in modulating chromatin structure, gene transcription, and potentially interacting with nuclear hormone receptors (such as estrogen receptor alpha). Its biological function appears to be as a transcriptional regulator, capable of binding single- and double-stranded DNA, and facilitating or repressing transcriptional activation. Genetic studies have linked ZBED4 to retinal and neuropsychiatric diseases in some populations, though no drug interactions, biomarker status, mechanisms of drug action, or notable safety concerns have been described in the available literature.
