Overview

Zinc finger C2HC domain-containing protein 1B (ZC2HC1B) is a non-classical zinc finger protein predicted to bind zinc ions and enable protein–protein and metal ion binding. Its structure is defined by a C2HC-type zinc finger domain, a less common variant compared to classical C2H2 zinc finger proteins. While the canonical function of zinc finger proteins involves regulation of gene expression as transcription factors, ZC2HC1B’s precise biological role remains uncharacterized. RNA and proteome data show expression in testis and select brain regions, including the choroid plexus and midbrain. Protein–protein interaction studies suggest involvement in pathways related to ciliogenesis and neurodevelopment. There is a hypothesized association with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) based on a single reported pathogenic variant in an ASD patient, but ZC2HC1B does not currently appear in clinical disease or biomarker databases. No drugs or clinical candidates are known to selectively target this protein, nor are safety issues associated with modulating its activity documented.
