Overview

Zinc finger CCCH domain-containing protein 3 (ZC3H3) is a member of the CCCH-type zinc finger family, characterized by its specific zinc finger motif configuration which typically confers RNA binding activity rather than classical DNA binding. ZC3H3 is required for the export of polyadenylated mRNAs from the nucleus and enhances SMAD-mediated transcriptional responses, particularly downstream of activin receptor signaling. It is localized in the nucleus and participates in mRNA 3'-end processing, mRNA transport, and likely in the regulation of specific aspects of RNA metabolism. The protein can bind single-stranded DNA but not double-stranded DNA in vitro, and is predicted to be involved in RNA cleavage. Although no direct roles in specific diseases or as a therapeutic target have been established, the related CCCH-type zinc finger family is implicated in regulating inflammation, immunity, and viral processes through effects on RNA stability and processing.
