Zinc finger CCHC-type containing 4 (ZCCHC4) is a member of the zinc finger CCHC-type protein family, characterized by the C-X2-C-X4-H-X4-C ("CCHC") motif, which confers high-affinity binding to nucleic acids, especially single-stranded RNA[1][2]. ZCCHC4 encodes a protein that functions as an rRNA N6-methyltransferase, specifically methylating adenine at position 4220 of the 28S ribosomal RNA—a modification required for proper translation[2]. It binds to S-adenosyl-L-methionine and is predominantly localized in the cytoplasm and nucleolus[2]. There is evidence that ZCCHC family members, including ZCCHC4, participate broadly in RNA metabolism processes such as transcription, splicing, and degradation[1]. ZCCHC4 is associated with some cancers, but there are no current drugs or therapies that target it directly, nor is it a clinical biomarker or known to present notable therapeutic safety concerns[2].
