Overview

Zinc finger FYVE-type containing protein 21 (ZFYVE21) is a member of the FYVE-type zinc finger protein family, characterized by the presence of a FYVE domain that allows binding to phosphoinositides. ZFYVE21 is involved in the regulation of cell adhesion and motility by contributing to the assembly and disassembly of focal adhesions, cellular structures critical for attaching cells to the extracellular matrix and for signaling. ZFYVE21 plays a regulatory role in microtubule-induced dephosphorylation of focal adhesion kinase (PTK2/FAK1), a process important for the disassembly of these adhesions and for integrin beta-1 surface expression. Its function links it to cell movement and possibly cancer metastasis due to its established role in focal adhesion dynamics. There are no established drug interactions, biomarker applications, or well-defined safety concerns reported for this target.
