Zinc finger matrin-type protein 4 (ZMAT4) is a member of the zinc finger protein family, characterized by the presence of C2H2-type zinc finger domains that facilitate binding to DNA, double-stranded RNA, and proteins within the nucleus. Functionally, ZMAT4 is implicated in gene transcriptional regulation, acting as a transcriptional inhibitor that affects cell proliferation, metastasis, and apoptosis in eukaryotic cells. Variations in the ZMAT4 gene—including SNPs and copy-number changes—are associated with the development of high myopia and a range of hematological malignancies, as well as thyroid and oropharyngeal cancers. Its capacity for nucleic-acid and protein binding highlights a central regulatory role in cellular processes, and its expression levels and genomic alterations are being studied as potential biomarkers for disease diagnosis and prognosis.
