Zinc finger protein 106 (ZNF106) is an intracellular, RNA-binding protein characterized by zinc finger domains, primarily found in the nucleus and nucleolus. It specifically binds to 5'-GGGGCC-3' sequence repeats in RNA and is essential for maintaining both peripheral motor neuron and skeletal muscle function, as well as normal mitochondrial respiratory activity within motor neurons. ZNF106 contributes to the regulation of alternative splicing and the expression of several genes in spinal cord and skeletal muscle, including those involved in neurite outgrowth inhibition. It has also been linked to neurodegenerative disease, particularly frontotemporal dementia and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis 7. Its primary recognized function is as a transcription factor and RNA-binding protein with key roles in neuronal and muscle physiology. There are no known drugs that target ZNF106, nor is it currently considered a conventional therapeutic target such as a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or ion channel.
