Zinc finger protein 117 (ZNF117) is a C2H2-type zinc finger transcription factor encoded by the ZNF117 gene, located on chromosome 7 in humans[4][5]. Like other zinc finger proteins, ZNF117 likely mediates gene expression by binding to regulatory DNA sequences, thereby influencing processes such as cell differentiation and adipogenesis[1][2][3][5]. Multiple transcript variants exist, some arising from readthrough transcription with the adjacent endogenous retrovirus group 3 member 1 (ERV3-1) locus, resulting in protein isoforms[2][5]. ZNF117 expression has been shown to correlate with subcutaneous and visceral obesity, is implicated in brown adipocyte development, and is upregulated in pancreatic islet cells from patients with type 2 diabetes[2]. However, its precise physiological functions remain incompletely characterized. No specific targeted therapies currently exist for ZNF117, and it is not yet a validated drug target.
