Overview

Zinc finger protein 131 (ZNF131) is a member of the BTB (POZ) and zinc finger domain-containing transcription factors, functioning primarily as a transcriptional regulator. It enables sequence-specific DNA binding and acts as a transcription repressor, particularly by inhibiting estrogen receptor alpha (ERα) signaling through direct interaction and suppression of its homo-dimerization. ZNF131 is involved in the negative regulation of gene expression mediated by RNA polymerase II, regulation of cytokine production, and immune system processes. It is expressed in the nucleoplasm and intermediate filament cytoskeleton. ZNF131 plays developmental roles, especially in the central nervous system, and has been implicated in oncogenic processes, such as promoting cell proliferation in gastric and liver cancers. SUMOylation of ZNF131 enhances its transcriptional repressor activity and its ability to inhibit estrogen receptor signaling.
