Zinc finger protein 148 (ZNF148) is a transcription factor belonging to the Kruppel family of zinc finger DNA-binding proteins. It regulates transcription by either activating or repressing target genes involved in cell proliferation, apoptosis, and immune responses. ZNF148 is upregulated in aneurysm tissue and plays a key role in smooth muscle cell phenotype modulation, impacting diseases like AAA, cancer, vascular pathology, and developmental disorders. The protein interacts cooperatively with other transcription factors (e.g., NF-1) and binds to promoter regions of genes controlling cell fate and inflammatory responses, making it a relevant therapeutic target for certain pathologies.
Regulates gene expression by binding to G-rich boxes in enhancer regions and modulates transcription activation/repression; impacts cell proliferation and apoptosis partly through binding to promoters such as BAK and p21
