Overview

Zinc finger protein 177 (ZNF177) is a human protein encoded by the ZNF177 gene, which belongs to the Krüppel C2H2-type zinc-finger protein family[2]. Like most zinc finger proteins, ZNF177 is believed to function as a sequence-specific DNA-binding transcription factor, enabling it to regulate the transcription of target genes by RNA polymerase II[2][5]. The protein consists of 481 amino acids and is characterized by its zinc finger domains, which mediate DNA binding. ZNF177 is localized in various cellular compartments, including blood microparticles[2].\n\nThe gene's expression and activity can be influenced by repetitive elements (including Alu and L1 sequences) in its 5' untranslated region, which have been shown to enhance transcription but repress translation efficiency[3]. ZNF177 has been implicated in epigenetic regulation, specifically as a differentially methylated marker in certain subtypes of glioblastoma, but there is no evidence it functions as a direct therapeutic target or that drugs are developed to modulate its activity[4]. It may also be part of a readthrough transcript with ZNF559 (ZNF559-ZNF177), but this is not known to affect its function as a transcription factor[6].\n\nWhile ZNF177 participates in fundamental cellular processes related to gene regulation, there are currently no drugs, direct mechanisms of action, or safety concerns associated with it as a clinical or pharmacological target.
