Overview

Zinc finger protein 185 with LIM domain (ZNF185) is a multifunctional protein characterized by a LIM domain, which consists of two contiguous zinc finger motifs involved primarily in protein–protein interactions rather than direct DNA binding[6][7][3]. ZNF185 also contains an N-terminal actin-targeting domain (ATD) that enables direct binding to F-actin and association with cytoskeletal structures such as stress fibers and focal adhesions[2][5]. It plays a key role in cytoskeleton organization and cell adhesion. Expression of ZNF185 is highest in normal prostate tissue and other organs (e.g., kidney, ovary, placenta) but is commonly downregulated in several cancers due to epigenetic mechanisms like DNA methylation[1][2][5]. Loss of ZNF185 expression is associated with increased tumorigenicity, suggesting a putative tumor suppressor role that may involve negative regulation of cell proliferation and maintenance of cytoskeletal integrity[1][4][5]. There are no current drugs that specifically target ZNF185, and it is not considered a classic therapeutic target such as a receptor or enzyme; however, its role in cancer biology makes it a potential biomarker for certain tumor types[1][2][4][5][6][7].
