Overview

Zinc finger protein 189 (ZNF189) is a member of the Krüppel-like family of zinc finger transcription factors characterized by tandem Cys2-His2 (C2H2) zinc finger motifs and an N-terminal KRAB domain for transcriptional repression. It binds DNA at specific response elements to regulate gene expression, often repressing genes by recruiting corepressor complexes through its KRAB domain. ZNF189 coordinates neuronal morphological maturation, regulates transposon-associated immune function, and is implicated in complex social behaviors in animal models. Although not a typical therapeutic target, ZNF189 plays important roles in transcriptional control and has been associated with cleft palate development. There are no known drugs or biomarker applications in clinical settings.
