Zinc finger protein 208 (ZNF208)

Target
ZNF208
Molecular classification
Transcription factor, Kruppel-type zinc finger protein, C2H2-type zinc finger protein
01

Overview

Zinc finger protein 208 is a member of the Kruppel-type zinc finger transcription factors containing C2H2 motifs, encoded by the ZNF208 gene on chromosome 19. It binds specific DNA sequences to regulate gene transcription, influencing various cell processes, especially transcriptional control mechanisms essential for cellular function and development. Several genetic variants in ZNF208 are associated with increased risk for certain cancers (including esophageal and laryngeal cancers), vascular diseases (such as ischemic stroke and coronary heart disease), and may relate to telomere length, with implications for aging and chronic disease. Despite these associations, ZNF208 itself is not considered a druggable or direct therapeutic target at present.

Mechanism of action

Not established for pharmacologic targeting; ZNF208 functions principally as a transcription factor that recognizes specific DNA sequences and regulates gene expression

03

Biological functions

Regulation of transcriptionDNA bindingTranscriptional control by RNA polymerase II

Disease associations

Cancer (esophageal cancer, laryngeal cancer, gastric carcinoma)Cardiovascular disease (coronary heart disease, ischemic stroke)Possible role in regulation of telomere length and aging
05

Biomarkers

Genetic variants (such as SNPs rs8103163, rs7248488) may serve as risk markers in cancer (esophageal, laryngeal) and ischemic stroke susceptibility
