Zinc finger protein 251 (ZNF251) is a member of the C2H2-type zinc finger transcription factor family, characterized by their DNA-binding zinc finger motifs and nuclear localization. ZNF251 functions primarily as a transcriptional regulator, binding to specific DNA sequences in gene promoters and modulating gene expression. It has been shown to suppress the transcription of dual-specificity phosphatase 6 (DUSP6), thereby enhancing ERK signaling, which promotes cell growth and proliferation. ZNF251 is upregulated in multiple lung cancer models and clinical samples, supporting a role in tumorigenesis and identifying it as a potential therapeutic target and biomarker in cancer. Like other zinc finger proteins, ZNF251 may also be broadly involved in regulating hematopoietic stem cell homeostasis and other aspects of gene regulatory networks.
