Overview

Zinc finger protein 268 (ZNF268) is a member of the KRAB-containing zinc finger protein (KRAB-ZFP) family, which are transcription factors characterized by multiple C2H2-type zinc finger motifs and a KRAB (Krüppel-associated box) domain[2][4]. ZNF268 is involved in the regulation of gene transcription, both as a repressor and an activator, and participates in essential biological processes such as apoptosis, cell proliferation, and the antiviral response. The protein is localized in the nucleus, where it can influence gene expression by binding to DNA. Notably, ZNF268 has been reported to be overexpressed in cervical cancer and is implicated in cancer cell proliferation and tumor growth, partly through the modulation of NF-κB signaling[4][5]. In addition, ZNF268 is involved in interferon signaling and the regulation of immune responses during viral infection[4]. There are two main isoforms: one acts primarily as a transcriptional repressor, while another contributes to tumorigenesis via pathways such as TNF-α-induced NF-κB activation. ZNF268 is not currently regarded as a direct therapeutic drug target; there are no reported drugs or small molecule inhibitors that specifically interact with this protein, and no direct mechanisms of action for drug targeting are described in the literature[4][5][7].
