Overview

Zinc finger protein 280D is a human protein encoded by the ZNF280D gene located on chromosome 15q21.3[1][5]. It contains five highly conserved C2H2-type zinc finger domains, which are characteristic for DNA-binding transcription factors, supporting its role in regulating gene expression[1][3][5]. Experimental evidence shows ZNF280D interacts with heterochromatin proteins (CBX3 and CBX5), suggesting a potential function as a transcriptional repressor involved in chromatin organization[1]. It is ubiquitously expressed at low levels in most tissues, with higher levels in embryonic endothelial progenitor cells, implicating a possible role in development or cell differentiation[1]. Multiple spliced variants and paralogs exist, and the protein is highly conserved among vertebrates[1][3]. Two disease associations—borderline glaucoma and X-linked intellectual developmental disorder—are noted, but direct causality remains unclear[5]. ZNF280D has no known direct pharmacological targeting, drug interactions, or biomarker uses. Its main scientific interest lies in its basic transcriptional regulatory roles and potential developmental functions rather than as a direct therapeutic target.
