Overview

Zinc finger protein 331 is a DNA-binding transcription factor encoded by the ZNF331 gene in humans. It contains a KRAB (Kruppel-associated box) domain, seen in transcriptional repressors. ZNF331 has roles in regulating gene expression and acts as a transcriptional repressor through its binding to nucleic acids. It is considered a putative tumor suppressor, frequently silenced by promoter hypermethylation in several cancers, thereby contributing to tumorigenesis and cancer progression. High-frequency methylation and downregulation of ZNF331 are correlated with advanced disease states and poorer clinical outcomes, marking it as a potential diagnostic and prognostic tumor biomarker. The protein may also play a role in spermatogenesis.
