Overview

Zinc finger protein 354C (ZNF354C) is a protein-coding gene product and a member of the largest family of human transcription factors. It functions primarily as a DNA-binding transcriptional repressor, acting via a C2H2 zinc finger motif and a KRAB domain. ZNF354C localizes to both the nucleus and cytoplasm in endothelial and other tissue cells, repressing genes including those involved in angiogenic sprouting. It can also suppress osteogenic effects of RUNX2 and may be involved in osteoblastic differentiation and myogenesis. ZNF354C binds DNA with sequence specificity and interacts with epigenetic regulators such as TRIM28 and histones, establishing a role in negative regulation of gene expression. Its broader family, zinc finger proteins, are widely involved in cancers and other complex diseases, but there are no drugs or clinical biomarkers currently developed specific to ZNF354C.
