Zinc finger protein 396 (ZNF396) is a protein-coding gene member of the ZSCAN family of transcription factors, characterized by C2H2 zinc finger motifs and an N-terminal SCAN domain. The zinc finger domain enables sequence-specific DNA binding, crucial for regulating gene expression. The SCAN domain mediates protein-protein interactions, allowing the formation of homo- and heterodimers, which in turn influences transcriptional activity and downstream gene modulation. ZNF396 is expressed in multiple tissues, including basal cells of the epidermis, and has been identified in basal cell carcinoma, suggesting a possible role in certain cancers. Its main biological function is negative transcriptional regulation. There is no direct evidence presently designating it as a therapeutic target, nor are there known drugs that interact with it.
