Zinc finger protein 41 homolog pseudogene

Molecular classification
Pseudogene
01

Overview

Zinc finger protein 41 homolog pseudogene is a human pseudogene (Ensembl: ENSG00000258680) related by sequence to the zinc finger protein 41 (ZNF41), a member of the Krüppel C2H2-type zinc finger protein family. Unlike protein-coding genes, pseudogenes such as this one do not encode functional proteins and generally arise from duplication or retrotransposition events followed by mutation and loss of coding potential. While some pseudogenes can act as regulators at the RNA level or have roles in gene expression modulation, there is no evidence for any such function for the zinc finger protein 41 homolog pseudogene. It is neither a receptor, enzyme, transporter, nor transcription factor, and is not currently known to be implicated in disease processes, drug action, or biomarker development. The functional, protein-coding homolog (ZNF41) encodes a transcription factor involved in nucleic acid binding and gene expression regulation; however, the pseudogene does not. Pseudogenes are increasingly studied for possible non-coding RNA functions or as evolutionary markers, but the vast majority—including this one—have no established biological or therapeutic importance. ENSG00000258680 should not be confused with the active ZNF41 protein/gene (ENSG00000147124), which has different properties and possible disease associations.
