Overview

Zinc finger protein 441 (ZNF441) is a member of the large C2H2-type zinc finger protein family, which acts primarily as a DNA-binding transcription factor[1]. ZNF441 contains a Krüppel-associated box (KRAB) domain, which is involved in transcriptional repression, and multiple zinc finger motifs that recognize specific DNA sequences[2]. Like other KRAB zinc finger proteins (KZNFs), ZNF441 is believed to play a role in gene regulation and the repression of transposable elements, specifically binding to and repressing AluY family retrotransposons in primates[2]. Experimental knockout of ZNF441 in human cortical organoids results in modest increased expression of ZNF441-bound genes, supporting its role as a transcriptional repressor under physiological conditions[2]. While ZNF441’s direct involvement in human disease is not established, the general family of zinc finger proteins has been implicated in cell differentiation, development, apoptosis, metabolism, stem cell maintenance, and immune responses[1]. There are currently no known drugs or clinical biomarkers associated specifically with ZNF441.
