Zinc finger protein 444 is a protein-coding gene product that acts as a transcriptional regulator, particularly by activating transcription of a scavenger receptor gene involved in Ac-LDL degradation. It contains conserved zinc finger domains, which are structural motifs facilitating DNA binding. ZNF444 is located in a gene cluster on chromosome 19q13.4, with a pseudogene present on chromosome 15. Several transcript variants and isoforms have been identified. Zinc finger proteins are the largest family of transcription factors in the human genome, and are pivotal in diverse cellular processes including transcriptional regulation, cell cycle, apoptosis, differentiation, and metabolism—though for ZNF444 specifically, established biological roles remain primarily transcriptional regulation related to lipid metabolism.
