Overview

Zinc finger protein 487 (ZNF487) is part of the zinc finger protein family, the largest group of transcription factors in humans, characterized by zinc finger motifs that enable binding to DNA, RNA, and proteins[1][3]. ZNF487 contains a Krüppel-associated box (KRAB) domain, which is known to mediate transcriptional repression by recruiting corepressor proteins such as KAP-1, leading to chromatin compaction and gene silencing[2][4]. While the broad family of KRAB-ZFPs is involved in diverse biological functions, including embryonic development, differentiation, apoptosis, and potentially cancer, the specific biological targets and functions of ZNF487 itself are currently not well defined in the literature[2][3]. Some information suggests that KRAB-ZFPs as a class can participate in the regulation of genome stability and the establishment of DNA methylation patterns, but ZNF487 has not been individually characterized as a therapeutic target, nor are there drugs or biomarker roles associated with it at this time[1][2][3][4]. It is also listed with aliases that reference possible pseudogene status, indicating that in some contexts, ZNF487 may lack a characterized protein-coding function.
