Zinc finger protein 488 (ZNF488)

Target
ZNF488
Molecular classification
Transcription factor, Zinc finger protein (C2H2-type)

Overview

Zinc finger protein 488 (ZNF488) is a transcriptional repressor belonging to the C2H2-type zinc finger protein family. It plays a pivotal role in transcriptional regulation through DNA binding and zinc ion binding activity, with pronounced involvement in nervous system development, particularly in the differentiation and maturation of oligodendrocytes together with OLIG2. ZNF488 mediates Notch signaling-driven formation of oligodendrocyte precursors and supports the conversion of adult neural stem progenitor cells to mature oligodendrocytes, which is critical for remyelination after nerve injury. Diseases associated with ZNF488 include hypogonadotropic hypogonadism 12 (sometimes with anosmia). No drugs, known biomarkers, or specific safety concerns have currently been reported for ZNF488, nor is it established as a direct target for approved therapeutics. However, its central role in neural differentiation and transcriptional repression marks it as biologically significant and potentially relevant for future therapeutic or biomarker development.
