Overview

Zinc finger protein 500 (ZNF500) is a member of the large zinc finger protein family characterized by the presence of C2H2-type zinc finger motifs, as well as KRAB (Krüppel-associated box) and SCAN protein-protein interaction domains. Zinc finger proteins like ZNF500 primarily function as transcription factors that modulate gene expression by binding specific DNA sequences, thereby regulating chromatin structure and the transcription of target genes[1][2][3]. While the precise biological functions of ZNF500 itself are not well-characterized, members of the ZNF protein family are known to be central to developmental processes, cell differentiation, DNA repair, and maintenance of genome stability[1][3]. Dysregulation of ZNF proteins has been implicated in various diseases, most notably cancers and some neurodevelopmental disorders[1]. However, there are no currently known drugs targeting ZNF500 directly, nor is ZNF500 itself regarded as a validated therapeutic target or biomarker. It is best classified as a transcription factor within the zinc finger protein superfamily[1][2].
