Transcription factor, Zinc finger protein, C2H2-type zinc finger protein
01

Overview

Zinc finger protein 518A is a nuclear C2H2-type zinc finger transcription factor that functions primarily in gene silencing and heterochromatin formation at pericentromeric regions. It interacts with heterochromatin protein 1 (HP1) and the H3K9 methyltransferase G9A, helping to promote the trimethylation of histone H3 at lysine 9 (H3K9me3), a key repressive chromatin mark. ZNF518A localizes to the centromere via centromere protein B (CENP-B) and has a supplementary role in maintaining pericentric heterochromatin, especially in the absence of SUV39H1, the primary H3K9 methyltransferase at these regions. Its actions contribute to chromosomal stability and proper segregation during cell division. There is no current evidence that ZNF518A is a direct drug target or widely used disease biomarker, but its role in epigenetic regulation implicates it in pathways relevant to genome stability and potentially cancer[1][3][4].
