Zinc finger protein 524 (ZNF524) is a nuclear, C2H2-type zinc finger protein implicated in telomere biology and transcriptional regulation. ZNF524 directly binds double-stranded telomeric DNA (TTAGGG repeats) with nanomolar affinity via base-specific sequence recognition and is localized at telomeres in human cells. It specifically sustains the presence of the TRF2/RAP1 subcomplex (components of the shelterin complex) at telomeres, supporting telomere integrity by suppressing unwarranted DNA damage response and recombination at chromosome ends. Loss of ZNF524 increases DNA damage signaling and telomeric instability, highlighting its role in chromosome end protection. While predicted to function as a transcription factor based on structure, ZNF524 appears dedicated mainly to telomere maintenance, rather than broad transcriptional regulation. There is currently no evidence that it is a therapeutic target, nor are there drugs or biomarkers associated with it.
