Zinc finger protein 536 (ZNF536) is a highly conserved protein encoded by the ZNF536 gene, belonging to the zinc finger family of transcription factors[1][3][4]. It is most abundantly expressed in the brain, where it acts as a transcriptional repressor negatively regulating neuronal differentiation, particularly by repressing retinoic acid-induced gene transcription[1][3][4]. ZNF536 binds and disrupts the retinoic acid receptor alpha (RARA) from interacting with retinoic acid response elements (RARE) on target genes and also directly recognizes and binds specific DNA motifs[3]. Associated phenotypes and potential disease roles include implications in neural development and association with autism spectrum disorder, but its precise function in human disease requires further research[3][1]. There is currently no direct evidence supporting ZNF536 as a therapeutic target, nor are there established drug interactions, mechanisms of action, or recognized biomarkers for patient selection or efficacy monitoring.
