Zinc finger protein 540 (ZNF540) is a human protein encoded by the ZNF540 gene, located on chromosome 19. ZNF540 is a member of the C2H2-type zinc finger protein family, containing a KRAB domain, and is predicted to act as a transcriptional repressor involved in negative regulation of DNA-templated transcription and translation. ZNF540 localizes to the nucleoplasm and cytosol, where it may repress gene expression by binding to regulatory elements of target genes[1][4][6][8]. ZNF540 is of particular interest in oncology: its expression is significantly associated with prognosis in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), especially in HPV-positive cases, where higher levels of ZNF540 are correlated with better survival[2]. ZNF540 is also implicated in the regulation of immune cell infiltration and cancer-related pathways, though direct targeting by therapeutic agents has not been reported. There are no approved drugs or known small molecules that modulate ZNF540 directly, and it is not currently considered a canonical pharmacological therapeutic target[1][2][8].
