Overview

Zinc finger protein 554 (ZNF554) is a member of the large transcription factor family known as zinc finger proteins, specifically of the Krüppel-associated box (KRAB) domain-containing C2H2 zinc finger subfamily[2][1]. ZNF554 is encoded within the KRAB-ZNF cluster on chromosome 19p13. Its expression in humans is mainly limited to the brain and placenta[2]. Functionally, ZNF554 acts as a transcriptional regulator, involved in cell differentiation, embryo development, and epigenetic gene silencing. Recent studies show ZNF554 has tumor suppressor properties in brain cancers: its decreased expression in gliomas correlates with higher tumor grade and shorter patient survival, likely due to loss of suppression of oncogenic and immune-related pathways and dysregulation of cell proliferation and cell cycle control[2]. Decreased expression also contributes to the pathogenesis of preeclampsia by impairing trophoblast invasion[2]. There are currently no known drugs targeting ZNF554, nor reported safety concerns specific to its modulation.
