Target intelligence / Profile preview

Zinc finger protein 558 (ZNF558)

Target
ZNF558
Molecular classification
Transcription factor, Zinc finger protein family
01

Overview

Zinc finger protein 558 is a DNA-binding transcription factor primarily found in the nucleus and is implicated in the regulation of transcription via RNA polymerase II. It is uniquely expressed in human forebrain neural progenitor cells—absent in chimpanzees—suggesting a role in human brain evolution and specifying developmental timing in neurogenesis. Mechanistically, ZNF558 evolved to repress LINE-1 transposons and has been adapted to regulate genes such as SPATA18, affecting mitochondrial homeostasis. Its expression is influenced by structural genomic variation, which may drive regulatory network changes during development
