Zinc finger protein 582 is a protein-coding, nuclear transcription factor found in humans. It belongs to the Krüppel-type zinc finger protein family and contains both a KRAB domain and nine zinc-finger motifs. ZNF582 is involved in transcriptional regulation and nucleic acid binding. It is highly methylated in invasive cancer tissues, especially cervical cancer, where its silencing is associated with worse outcomes. While not yet fully characterized, it is suggested to act as a tumor suppressor and is used as a diagnostic biomarker for cervical neoplasia. Hypermethylation and silencing of ZNF582 are linked to progression and poor prognosis in multiple tumor types, including renal cell carcinoma, oral cancer, and nasopharyngeal carcinoma. ZNF582 expression can be regulated by DNA methylation, and its methylation pattern is a valuable biomarker for the detection and monitoring of cervical cancer.
Drugs or interventions that affect DNA methylation can regulate ZNF582 expression. Diagnostic agents/hybrid tests combining HPV DNA detection and ZNF582 methylation monitoring for cervical cancer.
