Overview

Zinc finger protein 587 (ZNF587) is a DNA-binding transcription factor of the Krüppel-associated box (KRAB) C2H2-type zinc finger protein family, primarily involved in sequence-specific repression of transcription by RNA polymerase II[1][2][4][6][7]. ZNF587 binds and represses transposable elements and endogenous retrovirus (ERV) sequences in the human genome, contributing to epigenetic regulation, particularly in neural tissues and during development[2]. ZNF587, along with its paralog ZNF417, is evolutionarily recent and primate-specific, functioning as part of a species-specific layer of gene regulation that shapes neuronal gene expression through epigenetic silencing of target elements[2]. Loss of ZNF587 deregulates expression of certain TEs and downstream neuronal genes, potentially affecting the expression of genes like PRODH and AADAT in the brain; however, direct involvement in disease processes or as a pharmacological target has not been established[2][1][6].
